I spent the day in London reveling in it — I decided to take in a couple of Zep London landmarks — this is in Gerrard Street where the four members who would become Led Zeppelin convened at number 39 in August to conduct their first rehearsal….
It was 6 years ago today — the release of the fantastic Physical Graffiti 40th anniversary reissue Monday February 23 I spent the day in London reveling in it all and I decided to take in a couple of Zep London landmarks. The photographer Dick Barnatt also took a photo of them leaning against a Jaguar car. On the player loud and proud.. A few pops and crackles only adding to its authenticity.
Over the 15 tracks this double album contains every aspect that made Led Zeppelin so special…then, when I was 18 years old and now when I am 64… for me they are, were and always will be the best…. Loading up the 2 CD edition of Physical Graffiti in the double jewel box. I have a bit of an affinity for this version as it was one of the first CDs I ever purchased after I got a CD player in Back then I was very excited to be playing my fave album of all time on this new compact disc format.
These early transfers were done without any band involvement and Jimmy would take control again in May when he began a remastering project at Sterling Sound with George Marino engineering — the initial results being the Remasters and 54 track box set issued in October of that year.
I did a feature on the Led Zeppelin catalogue on CD published in July of that year for Record Collector, unbeknown that Jimmy was working on the remastering — my review of Physical Graffiti was quite kind to the version awarding an eight rating for CD sound quality.
There would be better versions on CD ahead but back in it was a thrilling novelty to hear Physical Graffiti on the new digital format…. This night was special as it was the first live show after the US release of the eagerly anticipated double LP, Physical Graffiti. By all accounts, they played a ferocious show that night that clocked in at nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Unfortunately, no bootleg recordings have ever surfaced of this particular show to document the power they were playing with that night, so it just will remain a very special evening for the ones who were there….
The beauty of this show — there was none of the violence and aggression from the fans that had marred some of the earlier dates in the Eastern US gigs on the 1st leg. I only had a little Kodak Instamatic camera with me at the time, so all my photos are grainy and low resolution. You still get the general idea by looking at them — but what I would have given to have my 35mm with me that night to truly capture this incredible evening.
It is burned into my memory banks for life. Mark Bowman. He found it in a shed back in and had it transferred locally and synced up by me. Special thanks to Lloyd Godman for filming this wonderful footage, as well as goldenretriever from The Dogs of Doom for helping facilitate contact with Lloyd!
Mick was born in Luton and is now 77 — up until he was still playing and recording but announced on his website last November that sadly, arthritis now prevents him from playing. I was too young to go to this gig —bet it was a great night and all for 50 new pence as it was back then as the UK had gone decimal on the Monday of that week….
Perfect for a Sunday morning…. I had my heart Echocardiogram stress test on Friday. Due to the screen not reading well I had to have an injection of dye film to assist it — of which they said there would be no after effects. Early on Saturday I went along for my first vaccine jab.
I was of course a little alarmed by this. I biked home much relived. The actual vaccine process was superbly organised and it makes me well up thinking of all the kindness that was shown by the nurses and all the amazing volunteers. My arm has been a bit sore but I have felt fine. Again, may I say a massive thank you to the wonderful NHS, staff , doctors and volunteers. The road map out of Lockdown announced on Monday for England is encouraging although much caution needs to exercised.
It wont change too much here for a good while — Janet is back at pre school and I am as busy as ever with a fair bit of plate spinning going on to manage a few ongoing projects. Not least of which is the updated expanded and revised Evenings With Led Zeppelin book. Mike and I are incredible excited and privileged to be bringing this substantial new work to fruition. No Ratings Yet. Cheers John. I couldn't even begin to try to put them in order. Anyway, I have read recently on Wikipedia that the song is about a woman who told RP that it was either "her or the music". He sees her ten years later, and he wonders if she had ever thought about him. You can tell that he really loved her, or he wouldn't have written about her later I'm sure that made his wife angry, him writing a love song about another woman. On the other hand, when you have that desire to create art, you really can't just ignore it.
Flag jamie on March 16, General Comment this song reminds me of the sweetest girl i ever met, I lost her a while back, but now I'm getting back together. It seems that this guy Mr. Plant had either a one night stand with this woman or was a past girlfriend of his and had the fortunateness to reunite with her after a long period of time.
General Comment i think this song is talking about first love and growing up and apart. General Comment The lyrics to this song were written about a girlfriend of Plant's who made him pick her or the music.
I think he made the right decision. Flag anderson on June 20, General Comment Personally, this is my favorite Zeppelin song. I don't know the exact meaning, but that's ok cause its beuty and arteesticness is just awsome. I love the calm laid back but strong riffs of Jimmy Page, which kind of portrays his personallity if u get what i'm saying The man is a great guitarist but never talks, I've only heard him speak once.
The slow deep poetry of Plant is also very impressive. Overall, I believe this is the real Stairway. Rate These Lyrics. Log in now to add this track to your mixtape! We do not have any tags for Ten Years Gone lyrics. Why not add your own?
Happy 10th Anniversary Ahmet Tribute!!! They did it!!! Only the fear of overwhelming expectations and not meeting them. Kicked some ass that night. Just blistering. Happy anniversary, greatest one-off reunion ever! Though I was not yet a member of this board and was on a different Jimmy Page board, it was indeed an unforgettable day as I was hanging out on the board along with others waiting for the setlist and pictures and youtube videos. A very exciting day that I won't forget.
As was said earlier, they kicked some ass that night! That sure was a quick ten years. That 10 years was packed with events and seemed to take forever. The 10 years since the O2 seems more like a blip. Nothing seems to have happened In I was in my 40s and could fool women into thinking I was younger. Now I am in my 50s and I ain't fooling anybody. I remember being excited for the show I remember the internet being slow around showtime I remember being astonished at the speed and quality with which the videos started popping up on Youtube And of course, being psyched they debuted "For Your Life" I was happy for the people who got to see the show But mostly I felt happy for the lads.
They had done it in front of the whole world. But I had no illusions this would lead to a future tour. One and done is how I saw the Ahmet Ertegun reunion. Hi brspled! Greetings from a freezing United Kingdom - pretty much like it was 10 years ago when you were on these shores. Like I've said before, meeting folk from the old board capped off a memorable and amazing day. Truly unforgettable. Howdy brspled! Wow one of the "old boarders" not literally old of course!
Good to see you post. Incredible show. Ten fast years I was lucky enough to see them on the 4th August and every year since I have had a little celebration on that date and I was even luckier to see them on the 10th December and for 10 years I have had a celebration on that day as well. Great memories both. Pilot, brspled and other old boarders met up for a meal before the show. Quite a few of us met up the night before after collecting our wristbands n tickets.
