Though there was no teacher, Babbitt had recruited a model to pose for him and his fellow animators as they drew. These "classes" were held weekly; each week, more animators would come.

After three weeks, Walt Disney called Babbit to his office and offered to provide the supplies, working space and models required if the sessions were moved to the studio. Babbitt ran the sessions for a month until animator Hardie Gramatky suggested that they recruit Don Graham ; the art teacher from the Chouinard Institute taught his first class at the studio on November 15, , and was joined by Phil Dike a few weeks later.

Walt Disney in [18]. Though the classes were originally described as a "brutal battle", with neither instructor nor students well-versed in the other's craft, [10] the enthusiasm and energy of both parties made the classes stimulating and beneficial for all involved. Graham often screened Disney shorts and, along with the animators, provided critique featuring both strengths and weaknesses. For example, Graham criticised Babbitt's animation of Abner the mouse in The Country Cousin as "taking a few of the obvious actions of a drunk without coordinating the rest of the body", while praising it for maintaining its humour without getting "dirty or mean or vulgar.

The country mouse is always having a good time". Very few of the animators at the Disney studio had had artistic training most had been newspaper cartoonists ; among these few was Grim Natwick , who had trained in Europe. The animator's success in designing and animating Betty Boop for Fleischer Studios showed an understanding of human female anatomy, and when Walt Disney hired Natwick he was given female characters to animate almost exclusively.

Attempts to animate Persephone, the female lead of The Goddess of Spring , had proved largely unsuccessful; Natwick's animation of the heroine in Cookie Carnival showed greater promise, and the animator was eventually given the task of animating Snow White herself.

Though live action footage of Snow White, the Prince and the Queen was shot as reference for the animators, the artists' animators disapproved of rotoscoping , considering it to hinder the production of effective caricature. Nevertheless, all of the above-mentioned characters were fully rotoscoped, including the Queen and utilized by their respective artists, some more, some less. It proved difficult to add color to Snow White's and the queen's face.

Eventually they found a red dye that worked, and which was added with a small piece of cotton wrapped around a tipple pencil on each individual cel. Helen Ogger , an employee at the ink department, was also an animator and decided to use the same system used in animation. The method was so time-consuming that it was never used again on the same scale. It was also used to a smaller degree in Pinocchio and Fantasia , but after Ogger left the studio in there was nobody with the same skills who could replace her.

The studio's new multiplane camera gave a three-dimensional feeling in many sequences and was also used to give a rotating effect in the scene where the Queen transforms into a witch. Paul J. Smith and Leigh Harline composed the incidental music score. Since Disney did not have its own music publishing company at the time, the publishing rights for the music and songs were administered through Bourne Co.

Music Publishers , which continues to hold these rights. In later years, the studio was able to acquire back the rights to the music from many of the other films, but not Snow White.

Snow White became the first American film to have a soundtrack album , released in conjunction with the feature film. Before Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , a film soundtrack recording was unheard of and of little value to a movie studio. At this time, Disney also encouraged his staff to see a variety of films. These ranged from the mainstream, such as MGM's Romeo and Juliet —to which Disney made direct reference in a story meeting pertaining to the scene in which Snow White lies in her glass coffin—to the more obscure, including European silent cinema.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , as well as the two Disney films to follow it, were also influenced by such German expressionist films as Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari , both of which were recommended by Disney to his staff. This influence is particularly evident in the scenes of Snow White fleeing through the forest and the Queen's transformation into the Witch.

The latter scene was also inspired by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , to which Disney made specific reference in story meetings. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre on December 21, , to a wildly receptive audience, many of whom were the same naysayers who had dubbed the film "Disney's Folly".

Snow White would soon be displaced from this position by Gone with the Wind in In September —seven months after the film's nationwide release in the United States— Variety also reported that the animated feature was having a remarkably long box-office run at theaters in Sydney, Australia.

There is a likelihood that the New Gallery first-run will run until Christmas. This re-release set a tradition of re-releasing Disney animated features every seven to 10 years, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was re-released to theaters in , , , , , and In , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became the first film to be entirely scanned to digital files, manipulated, and recorded back to film. The restoration project was carried out entirely at 4K resolution and bit color depth using the Cineon system to digitally remove dirt and scratches.

The film was a tremendous critical success, with many reviewers hailing it as a genuine work of art, recommended for both children and adults. Disney received a full-size Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones, presented to him by year-old child actress Shirley Temple. The film was also nominated for Best Musical Score. Noted filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein and Charlie Chaplin praised Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a notable achievement in cinema; Eisenstein went so far as to call it the greatest film ever made.

Snow White's success led to Disney moving ahead with more feature-film productions. The American Film Institute AFI , an independent non-profit organization created in the United States by the National Endowment for the Arts , [46] releases a variety of annual awards and film lists recognizing excellence in filmmaking.

The AFI Years A film's inclusion in one of these lists was based on the film's popularity over time, historical significance and cultural impact. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released on DVD on October 9, , the first in Disney's Platinum Editions, and featured, across two discs, the digitally restored film, a making-of documentary narrated by Angela Lansbury , an audio commentary by John Canemaker and, via archived audio clips, Walt Disney.

Both versions were returned to the Disney Vault on January 31, The Blu-ray includes a high-definition version of the movie sourced from a new restoration by Lowry Digital , a DVD copy of the film, and several bonus features not included on the DVD. This set returned to the Disney Vault on April 30, It was released on Digital HD on January 19, , with bonus material.

Following the film's release, a number of Snow White themed merchandise were sold, including hats, dolls, garden seeds, and glasses. The film Gremlins used the cartoon in the theater scenes. Director Mike Disa and screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos pitched a story explaining how the Dwarfs met, and how the Evil Queen killed Snow White's father and took the throne.

According to Disa, DisneyToon management changed the prequel to center around how Dopey lost his voice upon witnessing the death of his mother. The Seven Dwarfs made rare appearances in shorts, despite their popularity; they simply were too numerous to animate efficiently. The animated television series House of Mouse , which included many Disney character animated cameos, included the characters in the special Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse.

An animated television series featuring a new version of the seven dwarfs titled The 7D premiered on Disney XD on July 7, , and ended its run on November 5, The show takes place 30 years before the events of the original film. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

He taught us things that were very important for animation. He showed us how to make a drawing look solid. I learned a hell of a lot from him! The first duty of the cartoon is not to picture or duplicate real action or things as they actually happen—but to give a caricature of life and action—to picture on the screen things that have run thru the imagination of the audience to bring to life dream-fantasies and imaginative fancies that we have all thought of during our lives or have had pictured to us in various forms during our lives [ This point should be brought out very clearly to all new men, and even the older men.

Stand here by me and point her out when she comes. The Maids of Honour. The Lady Rosalys. The Lady Amelotte. The Lady Ermengarde. The Guinivere. The Lady Christabel. The Lady Astolaine. The Lady Ursula. The Lady Linnette. There was another—! What was she like? Her hair was black as polished ebony, her skin was whiter than new fallen snow, her lips were redder than a drop of blood!

Summon Snow White! I am here, your Majesty. That is she! And oh, she is Snow White! You are Snow White! The Queen has fainted! Oh, this is most important! Princess, Princess, see what you've done! Take her away, take her away! Would your Highness withdraw to the terrace until the Queen recovers? It's most distracting. Air, air! Out of the room, everybody! Giver her air!

Shall I fan your Majesty? Oh, I hope. Waiting on the terrace, your Majesty. Keep him there till I ring. Oh, pray don't anger him! Gain time! Get out, you idiot! Witch Hex! I must summon her. She must help me now. Ah, I remember! Ee, Eye- sof -o-gos. Ee, Eye-sof-a- giddle! Ee, Eye- sof -o-gos! Ee, Eye-sof-o- lof -o-gos! The Spell's wound up, the charm is clear! I summon thee, Witch Hex , appear!

The Witch. Here, help me out, help me out! I'm getting tired of being called up by you night and day. Last time I was in my night-gown, and it was snowing too.

I was an idiot to teach you that spell. Whatever is the trouble now? Don't be angry, dear godmother. You know how much I love you! You don't love me. You don't love anybody but yourself. That's the matter with you. If you only knew the trouble I have to take to keep you beautiful! Your disposition keep wearing through. If I should one say, "Bang!

I know, I know, dear Hex, but you wouldn't! Don't be too sure. Just summon me once too often, and you may find out how it feels to be the ugliest woman in the Seven Kingdoms.

Oh, tell me I am still the most beautiful! You look all right to me. But I warn you. I'm using my strongest magic now. Well, whom are you jealous of this time? So I thought till to-day, when I saw her for the first time prettily dressed. Well, why in the name of my cat Fiddle, did you dress her up? Prince Flormiond?

Mere boy! Probably said it to plague you, knowing your wretched disposition. But I've brought something with me this time that may help to keep you quiet. Just had time to snatch it when I felt you spelling away. It's a Magic Mirror. Ah, you see! Reflects you as you really are. If I stopped my spells that's what you'd look like. Now it makes me quite decent looking. That's because my character's better. Oh, the hateful thing! I never saw anything so terrible. Why, I looked almost funny!

Take it away! That's not all its magic. Hold it in your hand and say:. You who hold me in your hand, You were fairest in the land; But, to-day, I tell you true, Snow White is more fair than you! Listen to me, now. If you ever break that Mirror you will become as ugly as you really are and for life, too! None of my spells can beauty you again either, for the Mirror is made with those same charms. Snow White is more beautiful than I! Stop that wauling.

But I can't bear it! Oh, make a spell and turn her ugly—as ugly as a toad! Refuse to make any more bad spells. If you can't bear the sight of her why not send her away somewhere,— say to boarding-school. Why should she? Suppose at boarding-school she gets mumps or freckles, or whatever those children's diseases are, and dies of it.

You'll make a spell and give her the disease. No, no, no! Won't do any more bad magic, I tell you. You must contrive to have her lost on the way to boarding-school, and then just tell some tarradiddle to explain why she never comes back—and there you are!

Everything permanently settled, and a little peace for me I hope. I never suggested anything like that! Why I hear she's quite a nice child. I shall never know a happy hour while she's alive! Well, there's no arguing with you. But can you trust your Huntsman? Glad you know something! And look here, if your resolved to have Snow White killed there's a little favour you might do me. I'm making a new spell that is really hard magic—a hair restorer that will restore hair.

Want it for my personal use. I promise. Berthold shall bring it to me as proof. And now good-bye, dear Hexy. I must summon him at once. It's always, "Good-bye, dear Hexy," as soon as I've done what you want. I'm afraid you don't love me for myself alone dear Brangomary! But I'm as glad to go as you are to have me.

Say the "Quick Spell" and get me off. The Queen and Witch. Let me see. I ring three times for the Huntsman. Your Majesty you rang for me? Not for you, idiot, for Berthold. Give me a minute alone with him and then summon the Prince and Snow White.

Off with you! I hope it is to take you a-hunting, your Majesty. Your forests are full of game, wild pigs, deer—indeed there may be even a unicorn or two. It's other game I propose this time. You have been a faithful Chief Huntsman. Suppose I promote you to be Lord High Admiral? As we have no navy the duties will be light. Oh, your Majesty, how can I thank you? It depends upon your carrying out a task with absolute obedience. Come nearer. The Princess Snow White is to set out for boarding-school this afternoon.

You will conduct her. At the western gates, you will take the old road that turns to the left. But, your Majesty, that road leads into the deep wood. You will take that road. When you have come to the very heart of the forest—then [ and she hisses the words ] you will kill the Princess. It is my command. She has disobeyed me. She must be punished. Kill Snow White? I would slay myself first!

There is no man in your dominions base enough to do such a deed. Pray dismiss me! I have a surer means to command your obedience. You have six small children I believe? Suppose I lock your six children in the Grey Tower. Suppose I order that no one shall take them food or drink. Can you not hear their six small voices calling to you from the dark. Spare me! Then, when all has grown still within the Tower, I will say, "Berthold, here is the key.

Go and see how Queen Brangomar punishes disobedience. Heaven forgive me, but I cannot let my children starve! That's much better, Berthold. You understand clearly? Oh, what a tone of voice. Remember the motto: "A task cheerfully done is well done. You must bring me Snow White's heart, before midnight, as a proof. Here comes the Prince. Do try to look more pleasant. I hope your Majesty has recovered.

Quite, thank you. I beg everybody's pardon. Something I had for lunch no doubt. My dear Snow White, Prince Florimond has come to ask your hand in marriage.

What do you say? I was obliges to tell him how un-fitted you are at present to become a Queen. Indeed, I've long been thinking of sending you away to some select boarding-school for backward Princesses.

This seems the opportunity. Alas, she is more fair than thee. Reveal her name. Magic Mirror: Lips red as the rose, hair black as ebony, skin white as snow.

Happy: This is Dopey. He don't talk none. Snow White: You mean he can't talk? Happy: He don't know. He never tried. Let the sleeping death seep through. On the skin!

The symbol of what lies within. Now turn red to tempt Snow White, to make her hunger for a bite. Let the Sleeping Death seep through. Now, turn red, to tempt Snow White, to make her hunger for a bite. When she breaks the tender peel, to taste the apple in my hand, her breath will still, her blood congeal, then I'll be fairest in the land!

Snow White: You wash the dished, you tidy up the room, you clean the fireplace, and I'll use the broom. Snow White: Now, you wash the dishes. You tidy up the room. You clean the fireplace.
